Return of bird flu in the Netherlands: the transport of poultry suspended

Avian flu detected in this farm in the Netherlands. The authorities have ruled for 72 hours at a ban on the movement of poultry and eggs. The H5N8 strain of the virus is highly pathogenic. Contamination may be from an animal to humans, experts recalled.

150,000 chickens operating Hekendorp were killed, and surrounding farms are under surveillance.

The H5N8 strain, hitherto restricted to Asia, has been detected in early November for the first time in Europe, in Germany. In 2003, the Netherlands appearance of another strain of bird flu led to the slaughter of 30 million poultry.
