The President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano formally resigned this morning. He received military honors at a brief ceremony at the Quirinal Palace, before joining his Roman apartment with his wife Clio.
90 years old soon, Giorgio Napolitano announced in late December, his next resignation due to his advanced age and failing health. He was at the head of the state since 2006. This was his second term originally scheduled to end in 2020.
Senate President, Piertro Grasso, will serve as interim until the election of the new president by parliament, which could begin in late January. An election that already promises to complicated, different that may have difficulty agreeing on the name of a successor.
