Ukraine: a fragile cease-fire "generally respected"


Despite isolated incidents, the cease-fire is generally respected. This was the finding that Sunday morning of the Ukrainian army in eastern Ukraine. President Poroshenko gave the order to stop fighting, according to Minsk II agreement Thursday morning at a summit. The truce took effect at midnight last night.


Two civilians were killed only twenty minutes later, at Popasna (Lugansk region), by artillery fire from an area that Kiev considers to be controlled by dissident Cossacks do not respect the authority of the separatist republics.


Ukrainian forces have also been bombing around the state railway junction Debaltseve, where the battle was being conducted, the most violent in recent days.


In Donetsk, pro-Russian separatist stronghold, residents enjoyed a night in quiet.

The cease-fire is fragile. According to Reuters, a pro-Russian separatist commander felt this morning that the rebels had the right to fire on the city of Debaltseve despite the cease-fire.
