Each November 17, Greece commemorates the 1973 student uprising against the regime of the colonels. This year, scuffles broke out in the evening, killing five policemen wounded. A dozen demonstrators were arrested.
In the capital, tens of thousands of people attended the event framed by 7,000 police officers.
Every year, protesters march towards the US embassy to denounce the role of the CIA in the establishment of the dictatorship.
They also pay tribute to fallen twenty people November 17, 1973 during the uprising that triggered the fall of the colonels.
In recent years, participants also denounced the austerity imposed on Greece.
"We must be united to keep alive the fighting spirit of the event and does not commemorate a partisan" recalls one participant.
"The events of 1973 are timeless. They taught us that the only fights that have been lost are those that have not been done, "said another.
American, but also European flags were burned before the first clashes between police and protesters.
As a precaution, authorities closed prematurely Ecole Polytechnique, which was held to commemorate the uprising yesterday.
