East Jerusalem on alert Friday prayer

Including the holy city and its eastern part was under high tension in this day of great Muslim prayer.

More than 1,300 police officers were deployed in this part of town at the foot of the Temple Mount to counter a possible new outbreak of violence.

The police banned men under 35 years of access to the mosque compound, the third holiest site in Islam also revered by Jews. Israeli authorities say they have collected information on possible disturbances.

Annexed and occupied by Israel since 1967, East Jerusalem since July agitated by disturbances which have intensified in recent weeks. They killed one tenth Friday. A man struck Wednesday by a Palestinian driving a car ram succumbed to his injuries in hospital. According to Israeli Army Radio, he is a Jewish student 17 years. A police officer of 38 years had been killed, and the author of the attack, the second of its kind in two weeks, was shot dead on the spot.

It is in this context that already tense Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this morning ordered the demolition of houses, author of "terrorist" attacks in East Jerusalem.
