Cars ablaze, violent thugs, we're in Brussels. Yesterday the demonstration against the austerity ended badly. Yet it was not seen in 30 years, according to the Belgian trade unions, with more than 100,000 people pounding the pavement. They denounced reforms to achieve 11 billion euros in savings by 2019.
But at the end of the parade, "a group of rowdy and drunken dockers," according to the police instructed the security forces. Hooded, they threw paving stones, glass bottles, or rockets at police who responded without powerful water jets and tear gas. Dozens of police officers were injured, two seriously. Red Cross evacuated 24 wounded to hospitals.
