Citizen consultation on the status of Catalonia leaves no one indifferent in Spain. From Madrid to Barcelona, newspapers from all sides and citizens reacted to the announcement of preliminary referendum results that dare not speak its name.
"It is anti-democratic, they did not ask for all Spaniards. Catalonia is ours, it belongs to Spain "said the Spaniard.
"Nationalism is a romantic idea, but it is feasible. From an economic point of view, it is not viable. What happened yesterday is just another manifestation of independence ... "said the other.
Illegal for many essential and beneficial for others, this citizen consultation should open dialogue. More than two million Catalans have voted so far and 80% in favor of independence.
"Today I feel proud to be Catalan and being able to express my opinion, and what I ask now is please let us decide our future," says the resident of Barcelona.
"We need to start a dialogue. Catalans need to be heard. This feeling was not taken into account by the Spanish government, "said another.
Beyond the success of the mobilization, the voting results in themselves are inconclusive. The provisional figure of 1.6 million yes to an independent Catalonia corresponds roughly to 1.7 million votes tabulated by the separatist parties in the last regional elections in 2012.
But this very symbolic vote, the President of the autonomous region of Catalonia Artur Mas is seeking a real referendum. Acclaimed this morning, he held a press conference Tuesday at mid-day.
For now, Madrid is always listening.
