Ukraine: Kiev wants to try to isolate the separatist areas


Ukrainian President Poroshenko attended Tuesday's National Security Council and Defense Kiev. Objective: To consider retaliatory measures after separatists Sunday's elections in Donetsk and Luhansk.


While reiterating its commitment to a peaceful solution, the Ukrainian leader said he was forced to get tough and isolate rebel territories.


"I do not exclude that the meeting of the National Security Council could lead to a significant strengthening of controls at checkpoints to restrict the movement of those who may pose a threat here by sending groups of reconnaissance and sabotage" has he said at the beginning of the meeting.


Earlier in the day, the rebel leaders were invested "presidents" in the self-proclaimed republics they control. Aleksandr Zakharchenko victorious without surprise of Sunday's election, was sworn in as the great theater of Donetsk.


These elections, considered illegal by Westerners, have been recognized by Russia.


Many observers fear a new major offensive in eastern Ukraine, separatist leaders have indicated that their next objective was to take control of the port city of Mariupol.
