If George Orwell was right? This is essentially the conclusion that can be drawn up after consultation with the latest report on government Facebook requests it receives. The last six months, according to figures released by the firm of Mark Zuckerberg, these applications have increased by 28%.
In the third edition of its report on the first half of 2014, Facebook states that it received 34,949 requests from governmental authorities. And these applications have involved 49,479 user accounts, which also represents an increase of 28% compared to previous data dating from the second half of 2013. The United solicit Facebook under investigation of offenses proven, according to the national legislation. But the company reserves the right to disclose or not the information about offending profiles. And in the matter, Facebook has responded positively in 34% of cases, if we rely on the data provided.
The United States at the head of this informal ranking
Not surprisingly, the United States largely dominate the rankings. With more than 15,000 applications, more than 44% of the latter, the various agencies of Washington's most sought Facebook. In addition, the company has provided the required data in 80% of cases (Patriot Act and other provisions?). Conversely, the social network has provided France, 4th in the standings, 30% of the 2249 data requested.
Two European countries stood out: Italy and Germany. Indeed, between the second half of 2013 and the first of 2014, applications from Rome and Berlin have increased by more than 50 and 60%. Unfortunately, the exact nature of the latter is not specified by Facebook. In the current context, the fight against terrorism and fundamentalist proselytizing can be advanced.
Comply with national laws
The report also presents figures on the content data that was deleted by Facebook directly based on specific legislation particularly in some countries. In Turkey, more than 1,800 "content elements were so small," according to the terminology adopted, obstruction or defaming the father of modern Turkey Ataturk or to the state itself.
In India, the laws have forced the social network to further remove more content, almost 5000 for non-compliance with provisions prohibiting criticize religions or state. This figure, however, is to put into perspective with the people of the Indian subcontinent.
Between July 2013 and June 2014, the monthly number of unique users of Facebook increased from 1.1 to . Thus, even if states care more for the actions of individuals on the social network, the growth rate of the latter makes it more difficult control, unless Facebook pays assumed in self-censorship. And finally the question: What about civil liberties?
