Catalonia: Rajoy denounces "the failure of the independence project"

"This vote showed the profound failure of the independence project," this is the first reaction of Mariano Rajoy since Sunday's vote on self-determination in Catalonia. The head of the Spanish government clearly rejected any negotiations for the organization of a referendum as illegal under the Constitution.

"The parliament of Catalonia is authorized to begin a process of constitutional reform" he has said. "That's what they should have done from the beginning. This is the only legal and responsible way to move forward with these proposals. " But adding "I am against any constitutional reform that would lead to the end of national sovereignty and also my party."

The head of government and rejects the offer made Tuesday by the president of the Catalan Executive, Artur Mas, open a "permanent dialogue" on the topic. According to preliminary results, 2.3 million people participated in the consultation on Sunday, and "yes" to independence won nearly 80% of the vote.
