Bangladesh: a former head of pro-Pakistan militia sentenced to death


Death penalty upheld for the leader of the main Islamist party of Bangladesh. The Supreme Court considers that Mohammad Kamaruzzaman is well guilty of war crimes in 1971. He had been sentenced in May 2013 to mass murder, torture and kidnapping. It may now hanging by a few months, unless he gets a presidential pardon or if the case is reviewed by the courts.


According to the indictment, the Islamist leader was a leader of the pro-Pakistan militia Al Badr and would include killing intellectuals in the country.


On Sunday, one of the financial leaders of the Jamaat party Quasem Mir Ali, was also sentenced to hang.


A judgment that the party activists demanded for the release of Bangladesh gathered near the court.
