Palestinian President is visiting Sweden. Mahmoud Abbas was welcomed on Tuesday in Stockholm by the head of the Swedish Foreign Margot Wallström, before holding talks with Prime Minister Stefan Lofven. Among the topics of discussion, the conditions for a resumption of the peace process in the Middle East.
This visit is especially significant because Sweden is the first major country of Western Europe to have recognized Palestine as a state. It was last October.
This decision has angered Israel. Since then, relations between Israel and Sweden are the least tense. The Israeli ambassador in Stockholm has also disapproved the arrival of Abbas in the Swedish capital.
A total of 135 countries have officially recognized Palestine. In Britain, Spain and France, the parliamentarians adopted in recent months non-binding resolutions calling on their governments to follow suit.
