Costa Concordia: the verdict is debate

Italy is shared after the Costa Concordia verdict. Balanced for some, too light for others. "16 to 32 dead," reads the title of the press this morning.

Sentenced to 16 years in prison Wednesday by the court in Grosseto, Francesco Schettino was convicted of manslaughter, shipwreck and abandoning ship.

The former commander of Concordia, which has not yet said if he was going to appeal, was released on bail, judges holding that there was no risk of absconding.

Francesco Schettino said he was victim of a plot, saying he was paying only the price of the shipwreck, so that others preserve "economic interests".

Thirty-two people had died 13 January 2012. Carrying 4,000 people, the ship that sailed too close to the coast of the island of Giglio, had struck a rock.
