"Our goal is to free people from oppression and terrorism Daech."
The Iraqi army launched early this morning a major operation to retake the city of Tikrit hands of the Islamic State Group (EI). 30,000 men were mobilized on the ground. They are supported by the Iraqi air force and by Shiite militiamen.
This, one of the largest conducted by Baghdad against the jihadists, was announced yesterday by the Iraqi Prime Minister. Haider al-Abadi wanted to reassure the people of Tikrit, a Sunni majority, who fear reprisals from government forces. '' Our goal is to free people from oppression and terrorism Daech. We must protect the citizens and their property, '' he said in particular.
Located about 150 kilometers north of Baghdad, Tikrit is monitored for nine months by the Islamic State group. If the Iraqi army managed to regain this city, it could then start another battle: the reconquest of Mosul, the second largest city in Iraq.
