We were able to reach by phone Alice Clements, a representative of UNICEF, who was in Port Vila when the cyclone hit the archipelago of Vanuatu.
'' We went out this morning to see the extent of the damage, and it was a scene of desolation. Buildings have no roofs, others have either collapsed or is their structure was affected. Power lines are on the ground, there are trees and debris everywhere on the roads. Cars can not drive more than fifty meters without the road blocked by a tree or a power line. Under these conditions, it is impossible at present to assess the extent of damage.
I had the chance to be in a solid night hotel. But even here, my door was torn off. I hid under the sink in the bathroom. There are many people who did not have adequate home to face such a cyclone. So we are very concerned for them.
