The state of emergency was declared in Valparaiso and Viña del Mar because of a major fire, which is struggling to be controlled. Some 4,500 people have been evacuated from preventive material, a figure that could be quadrupled if the flames continue to progress. They are fueled by the wind.
The balance sheet is a death, a sexagenarian who has suffered a heart attack. In addition, more than 500 hectares of vegetation have been ravaged by fire and several houses destroyed.
The hot, dry weather of recent days seem behind the fire, a common phenomenon in this period of austral summer in Chile. Last year, the region had been hit by a major forest fire that had killed 15 people and destroyed more than 2,000 homes.
