Taiwan: a plane falls into a river, nine people presumed dead

An aircraft in distress of TransAsia struck an overpass and crashed into a river in Taipei Wednesday with 58 people on board, nine of which were presumed dead, while others were trapped.

This is the second accident suffered by the Taiwanese company in just over six months after the crash late July on an internal flight in which 48 people were killed.

Dramatic amateur video showed the ATR 72-600 turboprop of TransAsia currently flying low, hit a motorway bridge and plunge into a river, leaving behind a trail of debris.

At least nine people were presumed dead, said on television a charge of relief operations.

A major rescue operation that involved the army was going to try to rescue people trapped in the device, which was sinking. For now, 18 people were saved.

Images televisions showed rescuers standing on the wreckage in the process of trying to extricate the passengers using ropes. The survivors, including two children, were then loaded onto lifeboats to shore. Some of them were carried away on stretchers.

The accident occurred at 11:00 local time (0300 GMT) a few minutes after takeoff the plane Songshan Airport in Taipei to Kinmen Island.

On 23 July, a device the TransAsia crashed with 54 passengers and four crew members on an island in the tourism Penghu Islands, off the west coast of Taiwan.

Forty-eight people, including two French, were killed in the accident in very rough weather and ten survived. The area was then hit by the typhoon Matmo, accompanied by strong winds and heavy rain.
