Poland: farmers demanding the resignation of their ministers

Over one thousand farmers protested outside the government headquarters in Warsaw. After weeks of standoff, they demand the resignation of Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki, because they have still not received financial compensation for losses caused by the Russian embargo on Polish products.

Their claims also cover the penalties imposed by Brussels on exceedances of milk production quotas, as well as damage caused by wild boar farms.

Many waving red and white national flags and banners hostile to the Liberal government of Ewa Kopacz, protesters laid before building a black coffin, struck with the inscription "Agriculture".

Last week, hundreds of farmers perched on their tractors had temporarily blocked roads around Warsaw, the call of their unions.

Imposed last August, the Russian embargo affects pork, apples and Polish dairy products. In addition to the EU countries, the United States, Canada, Australia and Norway are affected.

Poland asked the European Commission some 26 million euros in aid to compensate its farmers hit by the Russian ban on EU exports.
