17 February 2008. Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia. Pristina celebrated around the new monument 'Newborn' 'symbol of a new birth.
Seven years later, the excitement has settled. No large-scale celebrations for the anniversary in the Kosovo capital, but traditional tributes like that made by the head of government to Ibrahim Rugova, the first President of the Republic of Kosovo.
A dull atmosphere that reflects great political and economic difficulties and profound social malaise, which prompted many residents to flee. Since the beginning of the year, the departures are increasing: more than 20,000 Kosovars would thus have left the country to join the European Union, where they hope to find work and a better life. Main destinations: Hungary, Germany, Austria and France.
