This is the third meeting between two personalities who greatly appreciate: Pope Francis and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have spent part of Saturday together at the Vatican.
The head of the German government began with a surprise visit to the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel, before a private meeting with the Pope.
Their discussions focused particularly on the Ukrainian issue, according to a statement from the Vatican.
Merkel also visited the headquarters of the Sant Egidio Catholic community to meet its founder Andrea Riccardi, also former Minister Mario Monti.
Sant Egidio is very active in interfaith dialogue and international political mediation.
