That was 20 years ago, on 20 March 1995, the sarin gas attack in the Tokyo subway. An attack by members of the Aum sect.
Thirteen people died that day, after inhaling the gas. And thousands of others were more or less seriously injured, some still feeling the effects of this attack today.
"Twenty years later, 70% of victims are still suffering from eye disorders," says Serge Rombi, euronews correspondent in Tokyo. According to him, "almost one in Tokyo on two says he is afraid when he takes the subway."
A memorial service was held Friday, attended by the head of government and several representatives of the victims' families.
The authorities fear that further attacks occur, especially in view of the Olympic Games held in 2020 in Tokyo.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has announced it a few days ago its willingness to strengthen international cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
