MPs were likely to vote in favor of the law on the end of life. 436 votes in favor, 34 against and 83 abstentions.
The text worn by members of the majority and the opposition, has been adopted on Tuesday. This is the second major reform promised by Hollande.
This law establishes the right to a "deep and continue" sedation for the terminally ill until their death. This choice, and therefore the rejection of aggressive therapy, should be clearly mentioned in the patient's advance directives. Binding guidelines, unlimited validity and adjustable or revoked at any time if the patient wishes. More from the Leonetti Act of 2005 which limited to three years the validity of these advance directives.
Jean Leonetti, author of the text adopted, the law "does not change the principles, but at the same time it gives much more independence, more freedom and power of decision to the one that is most vulnerable, the patient , the dying. "
Just before the vote, the meeting at the National Assembly was interrupted by anti-euthanasia individuals. Which threw leaflets in the Chamber.
This law, which thus gives the right to die to the sick, does not please some members calling it euthanasia.
