Novodevichy Monastery: Russian heritage in flames


A fire broke out last night on the steeple of a famous monastery in Moscow. The fire destroyed the bell tower restoration of Novodevichy monastery, dating from the sixteenth century, one of the major tourist attractions of the capital. 110 firefighters and 20 trucks were mobilized:

"There is no smoke inside the tower, says the head of the firefighters Alexander Gavrilov. There were several places that burned through the scaffolding surrounding the tower, but are now completely extinct. Nothing was damaged in and firefighters prevented the spread to neighboring buildings. "


According to the cultural department of the city of Moscow, the violation of safety rules renovations probably caused the fire. In the monastery cemetery are buried the writer Anton Chekhov, former Soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev, and Russian President Boris Yeltsin.
