Yellow, blue ... the colors of Van Gogh's works are altered over the years. Exposure to sunlight, artificial light, air oxidation, varnish added after the painter's death ... All these parameters explain that Van Gogh tarnish, darken, are not as bright as the day.
The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is trying to find solutions, and virtually recreate the original colors of the masterpieces of the 19th century.
"We try to go back, to see what looked like originally tables but also to extrapolate the future of these paintings, for example to measure the impact that the restaurateurs have, like removing varnish or other treatment, "explains the expert Eric Potsma of ICT Maastricht.
Van Gogh's paintings as "Wheatfield with Iris near Arles" lose their red pigments. Purple irises that had seduced the painter gradually disappears. And after months of treatment, the only immediate solution seems to be to decrease the brightness of the rooms of the museum or even reduce the exposure time of the works.
