Christmas synonymous with prayers in Indonesia, ten years after the tsunami

Religious services in Aceh to honor the 170,000 dead or missing victims of the tsunami in Indonesia. Every year for 10 years now, Christmas is synonymous with prayers and meditation. On 26 December 2004, a massive earthquake off Sumatra caused a huge tidal wave that will ravage eleven countries of the Indian Ocean coastline. Within hours, more than 220,000 people will die. Sumatra was devastated. Aceh is reached by waves of nearly ten meters high in places. Dozens of villages were wiped out. Since then, Indonesia has powerful tools to detect and anticipate any new disaster. But the country remains vulnerable. With over 6000 km of coastline and nearly 13 000 islands, prepare for a tsunami is a much greater challenge for Indonesia as other countries in the region.
