USA: new protests to denounce police impunity

In the United States, thousands of people gathered Thursday night in New York to denounce the impunity of the police. On their sign, the phrase "I can not breathe", these are the last words uttered by Eric Garner, a black father brutally arrested by white police officers in July. The man died of suffocation.

What has angered protesters, it is the decision two days ago by the grand jury not to pursue the white policeman responsible for the death.

The grand jury is an assembly of citizens drawn. They are responsible, not to pass judgment, but to decide whether it is appropriate to initiate upstream charges against a suspect.

Twice in 10 days, a US grand jury said a dismissal for a white police officer killed a black civilian. Hence the anger of the protesters. An angry President Obama said he heard: "Regarding our legal system - and we have seen, unfortunately these days - too many Americans feel a deep injustice, feeling that there is a gap between ideals is invoked and the manner in which the Act applies to the daily ".

Rev. Al Sharpton is one of the figures of the civil rights movement. "We want the Justice Department and the federal government recognize that the grand jury system no longer works at the state level, this system can not be applied in criminal cases and murders," he has said.

The US Justice Minister promised that an investigation would be opened against the police officer, and that proceedings could be instituted, according to the results of the investigation.
