Essebsi, a veteran elected president in 88 years

A 88-year-old Beji Caid Essebsi is an "old wolf" of politics.

Former disciple of the father of independence, Habib Bourguiba, he enlisted in 1941, at age 15, for the liberation of his country against the French colonization. It's independence in 1956, his political career really begins. First adviser to President Bourguiba, he was successively Minister of Interior, Minister of Defence and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

After the coup of November 1987 and the coming to power of Ben Ali, Essebsi changes sides. He joined the Constitutional Democratic Rally (RCD)

the new Tunisian strong man, and in 1990 and 1991, became president of the Parliament.

A past that mark in the eyes of the opposition as a pure product of the fallen system, despite its withdrawal from political life in the 1990s and 2000, and his return to politics in favor of the revolution in January 2011.

Appointed interim prime minister in February 2011, his government is in charge of drafting the new constitution.

The same year, he founded his own party, Nidaa Tunes, a motley training including businessmen, intellectuals, trade unionists and leftists, but also close to the former regime united by their opposition to the Islamists.

In the elections of October 2011, Ennahda won the majority of votes and received 89 seats in the Assembly. But soon, the Beji Caid Essebsi party itself as a real alternative to the Islamists for "Tunisia 21st century." In October 2014, Nidaa Tunes wins the parliamentary and ensures 85 seats in Parliament to Ennahda, which holds 69.

To those who criticize the age of Beji Caid Essebsi, very representative of a revolution driven by the youth, the elder statesman replies that "Youth is not a civil state, but a state of mind"
