Australia: hardening of immigration laws

Discourage illegal immigrants arriving by sea, it is the goal of a controversial reform adopted in Australia. It provides for the creation of provisional visas for migrants obtentant refugee status. Over a period of three to five years, they do not give them the right to settle permanently in the country. These amendments to the Immigration Act were adopted by Parliament on Friday after heated debate.

Among the opponents of the text, Sarah Hanson-Young, Green Party senator.

"I am appalled. Many people in this country are going to be shocked, "she said. "We can not take children hostage, only a sociopath can do that."

Previous Conservative governments had already implemented the controversial temporary visas. The Immigration Minister Tony Abbott's office defends its policy.

"By passing this law, the government has not only sent a new firm message to smugglers to end their buisness" said Scott Morrison, "but he also sent a strong message of determination of the Australian Parliament, and c ' is something that will strengthen the borders of our country. "

Currently asylum seekers arriving by boat are sent to detention camps in Papua New Guinea or in the Pacific islands.
