In Indonesia, 6 people including five foreign nationals have been executed in the night to drug trafficking. Foreigners were from Brazil, the Netherlands, Vietnam, Malawi and Nigeria. They had been sentenced in recent years. All had made a request for clemency rejected by the President of Indonesia.
These killings have provoked strong condemnation abroad. The Netherlands and Brazil recalled their ambassadors in Jakarta.
as well as other human rights NGOs also protested.
These executions are the first since the coming to power of the new president in late October. And perhaps not the last. Twenty detainees are currently in death row. Among them, a , was arrested in 2005.
Indonesia has a particularly severe legislation on drugs. The authorities justify this by the devastation caused by the drug.
