Alaa and Gamal Mubarak were released on Monday, according to the prison authorities. An Egyptian court ordered last week the release of the son of ousted president pending a new trial in a corruption case. But as this decision came a few days before the fourth anniversary of the 2011 uprising and the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak, the release of Alaa and Gamal was delayed.
The two men are accused of embezzling more than € 10 million of public money. They were sentenced to four years in prison in May. But the Supreme Court overturned the verdict on January 13. And according to their lawyer, they had reached the legal maximum period of detention.
