The bill passed Tuesday by the Ukrainian Parliament commits the country to "fill the criteria for membership in the Atlantic Alliance."
The text was voted overwhelmingly pro-Western parliamentary. 303 votes for face just 8 votes against.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, which must now validate the vote in parliament, had supported the text explaining that after the "aggression" Russian military, Ukraine had to find "more effective safeguards" to defend its "sovereignty", its "security" and "territorial integrity".
Although the way of Ukraine towards NATO membership remains highly uncertain, Moscow considers this decision "against productive" and could "exacerbate" tensions.
