France: heavy verdict in the trial of the storm Xynthia

The former mayor of Sin-sur-Mer (Vendée), René Marratier, was sentenced Friday to four years in prison. His former assistant town planning has her sentenced to two years in prison. They were tried for the death of 29 people during the passage of the storm Xynthia in 2010.

The judges ruled that the two elected knew full well the risk of flooding in the area, but they did nothing to prevent construction.

René Marratier's lawyers denounced the "unreasonableness" and announced their intention to appeal.
