Saudi Arabia announced last night the death of King Abdullah, who was hospitalized since late December in Riyadh for pneumonia. Over the age of 90, he officially ruled the Saudi kingdom for a decade. The Crown Prince Salman succeeded him on the throne.
'' I appeal to the Saudi people and the Arab and Islamic nation my condolences following the death of the servant of sacred places, King Abdullah. May Allah grant him a pardon, "said the new king during a solemn tribute to the deceased.
79 years old, Salman has regularly compensated the king's absence in recent years, particularly abroad. He served since 2011 as Minister of Defense. But his health also fragile, casts doubt on its ability to reign over time.
His successor is already known: it is Moqren, the youngest son of the 35 Abdel Aziz, the founder of the Saudi kingdom. He had been designated 'future crown prince' in March by King Abdullah of which he was the half-brother and a close confidant. After the death of the sovereign, this liberal, known for his hostility to Iran, becomes, in fact, the number two of the kingdom.
