Pope begins a two-day visit to Sri Lanka

Pope Francis began a two-day visit to Sri Lanka, a country that is still deeply marked by three decades of war between the government, dominated by the Sinhalese majority and the Tamil rebels, ethnic minority. Welcomed at Colombo airport by the new president Maithripala Sirisena, the Holy Father appealed for reconciliation and respect for human rights.

'' This is not an easy task to overcome the bitter legacy of injustice, hostility and distrust left by the conflict. This will be possible if the good overcomes evil. ''

The pope was also advocating interfaith dialogue in a country where hardly coexist Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians.

After Sri Lanka, the Pope will fly to the Philippines.
