A preliminary examination has been opened by the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court over alleged war crimes in Palestine, those committed in the occupied territories since 13 June 2014, when Israel had launched a massive campaign of arrests in the West Bank, and a war in Gaza.
Unlike Israel, Palestine joined the ICC on 2 January. In retaliation, the Jewish state had suspended the payment of taxes collected on behalf of the Palestinian Authority, the equivalent of a hundred million.
The Israeli foreign minister considers "scandalous" the opening of the preliminary examination. For him, it aims to "undermine Israel's right to defend itself against terrorism."
But joining the ICC also exposes the Palestinians to prosecution, including rocket attacks against Israel.
This preliminary review is the latest development of the diplomatic offensive launched at the UN by the Palestinian Authority.
