[Snapshots] Mardi Gras, the last day to celebrate carnival


Today is Shrove Tuesday, the last day of the many carnival celebrations throughout the Christian world. After Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, 46 days before Easter. The carnival celebration chaos and the reversal of social hierarchies, the beggar or king becoming a crazy day.


The Rio de Janeiro Carnival in Brazil is the largest in the world; he celebrated this year the 450th anniversary of the founding of the city. This is followed, in terms of attendance, by the Venice in Italy and Nice in France.


Traditions vary from one country to another, from one city to another. Costumes, floats, figures are often the appointment when others throw flour, water or orange face.


Germany and France this year, parades were held, when they have not been canceled, under heavy police protection following the attacks in Paris. Several tanks in Düsseldorf and Cologne had the theme of freedom of the press.


More like carnivals of Binche and Aalst in Belgium, one of Oruro in Bolivia and Barranquilla in Colombia are included in Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
