They were decided in January, but their introduction had been delayed to allow a chance for diplomatic negotiations in Minsk. The new EU sanctions, decided unanimously were eventually retained.
If they now hit the pro-Russian Ukrainian separatists, they also aim five Russian personalities, two vice ministers of Defence, two members of the Duma, the Russian parliament and a deputy chief of the General Staff of the Army Russian.
Moscow stressed the "inconsistency and illogic" of these sanctions. For the Kremlin, the decision of the European Union, "to be followed by an appropriate response, is contrary to common sense."
