A cease-fire was signed between the Yemeni army and Shiite militia Ansaruallah who had managed to get close to the presidential palace on Monday, including taking control of a strategic hill. The agreement was reached after intense fighting that claimed several lives.
The tension was raised a notch since Saturday in the capital, Sanaa, after removal of the Chief of Staff to the President, who is also one of the main architects of the proposed new Constitution. A text which the Houthi rebels oppose because it plans to cut Yemen into six regions, which deprive them of access to the sea, one of their main demands.
The militias have been steadily gaining ground since they entered the capital in September to fight President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi. In four months, violence between Shiites and Sunnis have claimed many lives.
