Hundreds of firefighters from across Australia are fighting against the fires in the last three days the Adelaide hills in the south. Declining Sunday temperatures facilitate their work, but the task is immense. There are dozens of homes. The fire started from Sampson Flat, in the Mount Lofty Ranges, a mountain range east of Adelaide, and continues to ravage the bush in all directions. Twenty fire soldiers were slightly injured while fighting the flames. A dozen homes were destroyed, others are already lost. Hundreds of residents fled leaving everything behind.
More than 11,000 hectares have been ravaged in the Adelaide Hills. This wine and agricultural area has about 40,000 inhabitants and is dotted with picturesque villages.
The authorities believe that this is the worst fire since the "Ash Wednesday" in 1983. More than 70 people had then died in South Australia and Victoria states and thousands of homes were razed .
In February 2009, 173 people died in the state of Victoria and more than 2,000 homes were destroyed.
