Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has accused foreign powers of supporting the perpetrators of the failed coup on Tuesday. While public television aired footage showing the head of state being cheered by the crowd and inspect weapons, dozens of soldiers and civilians were arrested and interrogated, according to a source close to the intelligence services.
Yahya Jammeh, who was not in the country at the time of the attack against the presidential palace returned to Banjul, the Gambian capital on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday.
"It was not a hit. It was an attack dissidents based in the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom, said the head of state. "
The Gambian Government is regularly accused of violation of freedoms by the defenders of human rights. Some fear now increased repression.
