The Orthodox have "sacred fire"

This is a highlight of the Orthodox Easter: Sharing the "sacred fire", also nicknamed "lights on Saturday." In Jerusalem in the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre, where Christ was crucified, thousands of pilgrims participated in the ceremony, in the presence of Greek Patriarch Theophilus III.

This ritual dates back to at least the 4th century. The flame is passed from candle to candle, and flies in all Orthodox countries for the Easter Vigil. A week after the Eastern Catholic Christians celebrate according to the Julian calendar the resurrection of Christ.

In Moscow, it is the opportunity to bless the traditional Easter dishes. In Russia we eat eggs decorated, but also Pashka, a cheesecake, raisins and nuts which recalls the form of the Holy Sepulchre.

The highlight of the weekend

Easter is the Easter Vigil on Saturday evening or expresses all the fervor of Orthodox Christians.
