Brazil: "Peace March" after the death of a child in a favela in Rio

"Less than bullets, more love!"

Hundreds of Brazilians marched peacefully yesterday in the Alemao complex to demand an end to violence and the departure of the police in the favelas.

Four people, including a child of ten, died by gunfire during exchanges of alleged shooting, and three others were injured in just over 24 hours in Rio.

Enough, enough, this man is indignant: "We can not have a child of ten who gets shot in the head with his mother who discovers the blood in the living room while she was watching television. Our society can not stand. "

Atila Roque, director of Amnesty International in Brazil believes that "it is necessary to break with the military model of our public safety, one that divides people between those who are and those who are" non-citizens ". Security that selects and makes some, especially young black criminals. We are not against the police, as it is also in a sense a victim of this exceeded "model.

The peaceful march yesterday came a day after a demonstration violently dispersed by police with tear gas. Favela residents complain of constant exchange of gunfire between traffickers and police. A year before the 2016 Olympic Games, insecurity remains a major challenge in Rio.
