Global warming threatens Machu Picchu

Visited each year by a million people and classified as World Heritage Site since 1983, the ancient Inca city in Peru of the 15th century is in danger according to experts.

One of the main dangers is water. Heavy rains tend to increase year by year. They could cause flooding and landslides on the site that has yet resisted the Spanish conquest as explained one of the leaders of the backup site.

In recent years, we had to evacuate tourists repeatedly threatened by the rising waters.

Another pitfall: forest fires fed by the drought that continues to grow and also threaten local agriculture.

Aware of the need to protect this heritage and its fauna and flora, the Peruvian government has implemented a number of measures and expectations of the great Paris conference on the fine climate, 2015.
