Truce: Bogota welcomes the initiative of the FARC

The Colombian government on Thursday welcomed the surprise announcement of the FARC in a unilateral cease-fire indefinitely. A truce to come into force in principle this weekend.

The announcement was made Wednesday in Havana, after the planting of a tree symbolizing the hope for peace. It was planted as part of a meeting between representatives of the Colombian government, those of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia and victims of the conflict. This is Cuba What started peace negotiations in 2012. The conflict, which is the oldest in Latin America, has more than 200 000 deaths.

FARC said the cease-fire would be canceled at any attack of the police or the army. They advocate the establishment of international observers, which denies the Colombian government that wants to self-assess compliance with the truce. The initiative of the FARC "can lead to bilateral and definitive cease-fire (...) if we get an agreement ending the conflict," said Bogota.
