This is the sad fact of the United Nations refugee agency. In 2014, the Mediterranean has become "the deadliest road in the world" for illegal migrants, candidates for exile in Europe.
At least 3,419 migrants have died trying to cross in search of a better future ... Since the beginning of the year, more than 207,000 migrants attempted the crossing. It is a figure almost three times higher than the previous record in 2011 when 70,000 migrants had fled their country during the Arab spring.
The High Commissioner for Refugees says that a record by a conflict of arc, conflict in the south, Libya, Ukraine to the east and south-east Syria and Iraq, pushing migrants to opt for crossing the Mediterranean.
Nearly 80% of departures are from the Libyan coast to reach Italy and Malta.
In late October, Italy has officially ended its Mare Nostrum rescue operation and handed over to Europe, although it has yet rescued in November 8000 illegal.
But the European operation, run by Frontex, is limited to surveillance of external borders of the EU, not rescue ... UNHCR criticizes this policy based on non-compliance of the asylum.
