A Palestinian minister dies in clashes with IDF soldiers


We learned to midday the death of a senior Palestinian official in clashes with Israeli soldiers in the West Bank.


Ziad Abu Ein was a Palestinian minister without portfolio but on the issue of settlements.


A hundred foreign and Palestinian militants had launched this morning a walk to plant olive trees near an Israeli settlement when they were stopped at a checkpoint by Israeli soldiers. Invective attended tear gas and beatings. Abu Ein was hit in the chest and neck encircled by an IDF soldier. Fell to earth, he lost consciousness and died in the ambulance that evacuated to a hospital.


Rami Hamdallah, Palestinian Prime Minister:

"Israel is committing crimes against our people daily, children, the elderly, and Ziad Abu Ein holding the martyr. That is why I ask the international organizations dealing with human rights and the rights of Palestinians to launch an international investigation into what happened. "


Ziad Abu Ein, 55, was convicted of the murder of two young Israelis in a bombing in 1979 and released as part of a prisoner exchange six years later.


Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has described his death as "barbaric act that can not be tolerated." He declared three days of national mourning.
