Are parents becoming desensitized to violence and sex in movies targeting kids?
Researchers recruited 1,000 parents living with at least one child who was 6 to 17 years old. They had them watch a series of clips from popular movies in succession. All but one were rated PG-13 or R.
After each clip, the participants were asked, at what age do you think it would be ok for a child to see the movie from which this clip was taken?
Early in the viewing process, the parents rated scenes with violence appropriate at an average age of 16.9 years, and scenes with sex appropriate at 17.2 years. By the end of the study, the parents rated similar scenes of violence appropriate at an average age of 13.9 years and sex at 14 years.
The researchers say desensitization was clearly evident even within the short duration of this study. These changing standards, according to the team, may present challenges for a rating system, which is there to warn about potentially unsuitable content.
