In Shanghai, the evening of New Year turned to tragedy. At least 36 people died in a stampede on the tourist promenade of the Bund, a traditional gathering place during the end of year festivities. Witnesses said the stampede was caused by coupons, similar to dollars, thrown from a bar overlooking the site. The victims, mostly young women, were trampled. Forty people were injured, of which thirteen seriously.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, many are shocked. '' It's too cruel, says this young woman, this last night on the premises. In front of us there were people on the ground who were being trampled. It was not an emergency such as a terrorist attack where you run for your life, people just wanted to leave. ''
"I am shocked and horrified, adds this resident of Shanghai. Many people come every day on the Bund. Yesterday was New Year is an important day for everyone, families, lovers, friends. I'm sad for all those lives lost. ''
The Chinese authorities have announced the opening of an investigation to determine the exact causes of this tragedy. This is the worst disaster in Shanghai since the fire of an apartment building in 2010.
