Croatians went to the polls to elect their head of state. The outgoing president, Social Democrat Ivo Josipovic, is leading the 1st round polls in this former Yugoslav republic, last member of the European Union since July 2013.
The voting took place amid a severe economic crisis and the rival Josipovic hopes to enjoy. Former head of the Croatian diplomacy, Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic is the candidate of the conservative camp.
The two main candidates have pledged to work to improve the economy, even if these powers are not within the presidential office.
"Above all, I hope that the economy improves so that more people find work and thus, the standard of living rose. I also want to end corruption, "said the voter in Zagreb.
"The time has come to take the necessary economic measures. We must do something against poverty and help all those people on the street who are reduced to scavenging. We must move forward in a civilized manner, "said the other voter.
The unemployment rate is approaching 20% and one in two young unemployed.
The Presidential is a test for the relative strength of the left in power and the Conservatives in opposition before the parliamentary scheduled for late 2015.
