A few hundred people were still trapped on Sunday afternoon ferry Norman Atlantic where a fire broke out in the early morning between Greece and Italy. At least one man was killed, according to Athens.
Italian flag and chartered by the Greek company Anek, Norman Atlantic was on the Patras-Ancona route. According to Greek official figures, he was carrying 478 people.
A distress signal was sent while the boat was a few dozen kilometers from the island Othoni, near Corfu. It was drifting towards the Albanian coast in the afternoon.
At least 130 people were evacuated by boat or helicopter.
"We are on the bridge, we have cold and we cough because of the smoke," stated a joint passenger over the phone by a Greek media.
Winds fanning the fire, torrential rain and stormy seas have, from the morning, greatly complicated the rescue operations.
